Load Resistors for LED Bulbs

Load resistors for LED conversions — bulb-specific plug-in pairs for H1, H3, H4, H7, H8/H11, 9005, 9006 and T10, plus universal 12V and 24V resistors. They correct the fast indicator flash and dashboard bulb warnings that appear after fitting LEDs.

Why an LED Conversion Needs a Resistor

An LED bulb draws a fraction of the current a filament bulb does. Vehicles that monitor their lighting measure that current to decide whether a bulb is working, so the lower draw reads as a failed bulb. Two symptoms follow: the indicators flash at roughly double speed — hyper flash, which is the vehicle telling you a bulb has blown — and a bulb-out warning appears on the dashboard.

Nothing is actually wrong. A load resistor wires in parallel with the LED and draws the missing current, so the vehicle sees the load it expects and behaves normally.

Bulb-Specific Resistors

These come with the connector for the bulb base already fitted — H1, H3, H4, H7, H8/H11, 9005, 9006 and T10 — so they plug in between the holder and the bulb with no cutting or splicing. All are rated 9–16V and supplied as pairs in a plastic shell. Order the type that matches the bulb you have fitted.

Universal Load Resistors

The 12V and 24V load resistor pairs are the general-purpose option, wired in rather than plugged in. Use these for positions where no bulb-specific version exists, and for 24V systems — the bulb-specific resistors are 9–16V and are not suitable for a 24V vehicle.

Fitting and Heat

Load resistors work by converting the excess current into heat, and they get genuinely hot in normal operation — hot enough to melt plastic trim and damage wiring insulation. Mount them to bare metal, away from the loom, and never against plastic panels, carpet or behind a lens. This is the most common mistake with resistors and the reason for most of the problems people have with them.

They also cancel out the power saving of the LED at that position, since the current the LED no longer uses is being deliberately burned off. That is the trade-off for keeping the vehicle's monitoring happy.

When You Do Not Need One

A resistor is not always necessary. Vehicles without bulb failure monitoring will run LEDs without complaint. CANbus versions of LED bulbs include the necessary circuitry already, and several lamps in our range have a smart resistor built into the unit — check the product before adding a separate resistor you do not need.

Choosing a Load Resistor

  • Match the bulb base — H1, H3, H4, H7, H8/H11, 9005, 9006 or T10
  • Use the universal 24V pair for 24V vehicles; base-specific units are 9–16V only
  • Supplied in pairs, so one pack covers both sides
  • Mount to bare metal, clear of wiring and plastic
  • Check first whether a CANbus bulb or built-in smart resistor makes one unnecessary

Check the individual product pages for the fitting type and voltage rating before ordering.
